How Long does lip blush last?

Reading time: Five minutes.

Lip blush tattooing is a fantastic way to add a touch of natural-looking colour to your lips! But how long does it last?

Here’s everything you need to know about the longevity of lip blush and the factors that affect it. We’ll also share some tips to help you make sure your beautifully tinted lips stay that way for as long as possible.

What Is Lip Blush?

Lip blush is a semi-permanent makeup technique that adds a natural tint to your lips, giving them a subtle and healthy colour.

The process involves using a motorized machine and thin needle to deposit pigment superficially into the skin.

Lip tattooing creates an effect similar to wearing tinted lip balm or light lipstick.

How Long Does Lip Blushing Last?

When done by a skilled permanent makeup artist, lip blush can last 3–5 years. A refresh sesh is recommended every 2–3 years to maintain the colour and shape of your lips.

Factors That Affect Lip Blush Longevity

Several external factors can affect how long lip blush lasts on an individual:

  • Skin type: Dry lips tend to flake off the colour faster.

  • Lifestyle: Spending lots of time in the sun or tanning beds can cause lip blush to fade faster. Using a chapstick with a high SPF can help prevent fading due to sun exposure.

  • Skincare: Using certain skincare products, such as chemical exfoliants and retinol, on or around the lips can cause pigment to fade faster.

  • Aftercare: Follow proper aftercare instructions to help prolong the life of your lip blush.

  • Touch-ups: Regular touch-up/refersh appointments every 2–3 years are recommended to maintain the vibrancy and colour of your lip blush

What Can I Expect at My Lip Blush Appointment?

At your initial lip blush appointment, your permanent makeup artist will consult with you to determine the best colour and shape for your lips. We encourage you to bring in your favorite lip shade if you have one to help guide us on your preferred colour selection. The procedure could take anywhere from 2 to 3 hours based on the size of your lips and your desired result.

Your artist will apply topical numbing before and during your appointment to minimize discomfort during the process. During the procedure, pigment is carefully inserted into your lips using a fine needle and tattooing device. Most clients find the procedure perfectly comfortable due to the numbing products we use.

Lip Blushing Healing Process Day by Day

The process of healing for lip blush tattoos occurs in stages. Here's what you can expect:

  • Day 1-3: At first, the colour may appear bold, but this will gradually subside. Mild-moderate swelling may occur, but swelling typically subsides after 24 hours. Lips may feel overly dry and tight. The use of our healing ointment will reduce discomfort after the procedure.

  • Day 4-5: A thin layer begins to slough off/peel, revealing a lighter colour beneath. Do not pick at the peeling skin. Keep applying the ointment to reduce the appearance of the peeling.

  • Day 6-10: The lips may go through a “light phase” after the initial peeling is done, but the colour will “bloom” back over the next few weeks. The light phase is due to the skin layers healing underneath the surface.

  • Week 2: The lips should feel softer, and the colour will have settled to its permanent shade.

  • Weeks 4-6: Your lips should have fully healed, and the colour has stabilized. A touch-up appointment will be scheduled to perfect any areas that may have lost pigment during the healing process.

What Can I Do To Make My Lip Blush Last Longer?

Lip blush is an investment, and just like any good investment, you want to get the most bang for your buck. Here are some tips to get more longevity out of your lip blush.

Before Your Appointment:

  • Exfoliate your lips and keep them hydrated the week before your appointment.

  • If you have a history of cold sores, take antiviral medication prescribed by your doctor before and after the procedure to prevent an outbreak.

  • Avoid blood thinners, such as alcohol, ibuprofen, aspirin, or fish oil supplements, for 24 hours before your appointment to prevent excessive bleeding during the procedure.

  • Avoid caffeine and pre-workout on the day of your appointment to minimize sensitivity.

  • Eat a couple of hours before your appointment to maintain blood sugar levels.

  • Keep in mind that smoking and diabetes can slow down healing and require longer recovery.

After Your Appointment:

  • Blot the area every 20-30 minutes with a moistened cotton pad for the first four hours.

  • Apply the provided aftercare ointment 3-4 times daily using a Q-tip.

  • Do not saturate the treated area with water for at least seven days. Gentle cleansing is allowed, but do not submerge your lips in water.

  • Drink plenty of water through a straw to keep lips from drying out.

  • Eat everything with a knife and fork to avoid food touching the area. It is also best to avoid spicy and overly salty foods.

  • Do not pick at or peel off scabs or dry skin, as this might remove pigment and lead to scarring.

  • Avoid hot baths, saunas, steam showers, hot yoga, and Jacuzzis for the first week. Lukewarm water is acceptable.

  • Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds until fully healed. Once your lips are healed, apply SPF lip balm before going out in the sun to prevent fading.

  • Use a straw for all liquids, including coffee, wine and soups for the next seven days.

  • Exercise caution when brushing your teeth, and avoid whitening toothpaste during healing.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for one week. If exercising, prevent sweat from contacting the treated area. Be mindful of bacteria in gyms that can increase infection risk.

  • Refrain from kissing or any activities that cause skin friction until fully healed.

Remember, healing takes time. Only contact your technician with concerns about colour, shape, or symmetry after your lips have completely healed.
